My Thrift Shop Find: Abingdon Pottery

  I was drawn to these pieces because of their soft pastel hue and Art Deco lines.  A little research revealed my thrift shop find has a fascinating history!
 
Abingdon Sanitary Company produced plumbing fixtures.  The economy went down the toilet after the stock market crashed in 1929 and the construction sector came to a standstill.  The company changes its business strategy and began to produce decorative pottery, which helped it survive the Great Depression.
 
Here’s some lessons we can all learn from Abingdon:

• Diversify your life.  Don’t count on any one person, thing, or investment as the only way to reach your goals.  As the old farm proverb says, don’t put all your eggs in one basket!  Keep learning and growing.

 

• Sell products at a variety of price points.  A company that does this still makes a sale even when a customer is pinching pennies.  Some profit is better than none.

 

• Change is the constant.  Trying something new can be a game changer that completely shifts your perspective.
